Piergiorgi helps lift Mount Sinai past Port Jeff, 5-1
SOFTBALL April 22, 2010 | 04:33 PM
Mount
Sinai freshman Michelle Piergiorgi out dueled Port Jefferson ace
Michiko McGivney to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1 victory in a crossover
softball game on Tuesday. Piergiorgi was brilliant in the circle
holding the Royals to one run on five hits while striking out two,
walking three and hitting one batter.
The win by Piergiorgi was
her second of the year. "I really wanted to win for my father who is in
Florida," said Piergiorgi. "Port Jefferson is a great team and I think
they did their best. My fastball was working and I just tried to keep
coming in."
"It was a good game and a great showing for us,"
said Mount Sinai head coach Allison Maire. "Michelle kept on going even
after she was hit by those two balls. I was very happy with this game.
This one means a lot."
McGivney was also solid on the mound. The
sophomore sensation, who had lost just once before in 2010, fell victim
to fate. Mount Sinai got all the runs they would need in the top of the
third. With one out Danielle Spears blooped a single into right field.
Kelsey Lubin followed with a hard single to left and Jordan Fiore kept
things going with a hard smash past the third base bag to load the
bases. McGivney then walked home the go ahead run giving the Mustangs a
1-0 lead.
A grounder to short was gobbled up by Rene Marchewka
but she missed the tag on the runner moving from second to third, which
plated another Mount Sinai run. After McGivney fanned Lindsay Putkowski
for the second out Danielle Parente grounded into a fielder's choice
ending with an unusual 3-6-1-2-5 run down. But in the process the
Mustangs pushed another run across the plate to take a 3-0 lead.
The
Royals had little luck getting their offense going. In the fourth they
put two runners on base with a double to right-center by Molly Gibson
and a walk to Morgan Sakovich, but they couldn't do anything else as
Piergiorgi got Courtney Fee to pop out and Jacqueline Lennon to ground
out to second.
In the fifth the Royals threatened again as
McGivney smashed a single off Piergiorgi's leg and Chelsea Tamuk drew a
walk. But Gibson's bullet liner ended the inning.
"We played
decent but we made some errors," said Gibson, who was magnificent in
the field and collected one hit in three at bats. "But it's things that
we can fix."
The Mustangs reached McGivney for two more runs
in the top of the seventh. A bunt single, a single to left and two
stolen bases put runners on second and third with no outs. Fiore
followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. After McGivney got Sarah
Shine to fly out to center, Gianna Gulli grounded a single up the
middle scoring the Mustangs fifth run.
The Royals finally plated
a run in their half of the seventh. The inning was led off with Lennon
being hit by a pitch. Danielle Grier then grounded out to second moving
the runner to second. After Anastasia Lennon flew out to left, McGivney
grounded a single up the middle putting runners at first and third.
Piergiorgi then blew the shutout by throwing a wild pitch that plated
the Royals first and only run. But Piergiorgi regrouped and got Tamuk
to ground out to second.
"We had some baserunning errors that
cost us one maybe two runs," said Port Jefferson head coach Deb Brown.
"We needed a wakeup call to bring up our game."
